Associate Professor of Film, TV, and Media Toddy Eames earned the award for Best Cinematography at the Vermont Film Festival for the film AXEL, a short documentary she co-produced. AXEL explores themes of childhood and rebellion through the lens of a 14-year-old skateboarder, musician, and graffiti artist in upstate Vermont.
Professor and Chair of Africana Studies Donna Nicol and Executive Director of the Dymally Institute Anthony Asadullah Samad, along with others, co-authored the “State of Black Los Angeles County Report,” which launched April 8 at the Douglas F. Dollarhide Community Center in Compton.
The report’s findings show that that Black people in L.A. County continue to experience the effects of structural racism perpetuated over generations. It is also the starting point for adopting and implementing anti-racist policies and initiatives to eliminate racial disparities across multiple domains.

Assistant Professor of Teacher Education Jarod Kawasaki authored “Racial Capitalism and Student Teachers of Color: A Mixed Methods Case Exploring the Cost of Becoming a Teacher” in the New Educator journal’s special issue on teacher shortages in the U.S. The article shines light on the financial burdens that teacher candidates of color experience when becoming a teacher. It uses racial capitalism as a framework for critiquing assumptions of financial capacity embedded in state policy and teacher preparation programs that ask candidates of color to complete a full-time unpaid fieldwork experience in order to become a teacher.

At a time when relationships between traditional media (like newspapers) and police have become strained, social media allows law enforcement to regain more control over narratives of crime. Such was the expert opinion of Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Administration Sarah Britto, who was interviewed by FiveThirtyEight for an article about racial bias on police Facebook pages.

Explain the importance of meeting due dates and paying for their purchases in their entirety.” – Prakash Dheeriya, professor of finance, was a featured expert in a parents’ guide to debit and credit cards for kids by MoneyGeek.
“The Long Beach Grand Prix takes place during Earth Week and near areas affected by the Port of Los Angeles (and the Port of Long Beach) in the ‘Diesel Death Zone.’ This is the perfect venue to showcase environmentally conscious technological advancements in racing and in large-scale sporting events.” – Jenney Hall, lecturer of interdisciplinary and environmental studies, spoke about the impact of the Acura Long Beach Grand Prix with the Daily Breeze.

It is important to be aware of these issues when considering AI’s impact on society.” – Professor of Computer Science Marek Suchenek was interviewed about artificial intelligence for Decrypt.
