College of Arts and Humanities
Gilah Yelin Hirsch, professor of art emerita, was honored in Budapest, Hungary in June at the book launch of the 25th anniversary volume of Napùt, in which a chapter of the Archaeology of Metaphor: The Art of Gilah Yelin Hirsch was translated into Hungarian for the commemorative volume. She opened a solo exhibition of her paintings and award-winning films at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, and delivered a comprehensive talk on the breadth and depth of her multidisciplinary work. While in Hungary, Hirsch also represented the U.S. in the International Painters’ Symposium in Tiszanana.
In October, Hirsch was invited to participate in the Beyond Baroque exhibition and silent auction. Her work will be included in an exhibition at The Braid theatre in Santa Monica this December.
Professor and Chair of History Laura Talamante received the Tyler Stovall Western Society for French History Mission Prize due to her outstanding efforts to combat structural inequality and promote empowerment and inclusion within and beyond the world of French and Francophone historical studies. The prize selection committee was especially impressed by Talamante’s work cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and empowering space at CSUDH.
In October, Talamante also served on an LA Opera professional development panel for educators, where she discussed the historical and cultural context of The Barber of Seville.
College of Education
Associate Professor of School Leadership Yesenia Fernández and Associate Professor of Liberal Studies Jen Stacy launched In Dialogue/En Diálogo, an education journal hosted on the Open Journal Systems platform sponsored through the CSU Chancellor’s Office and supported by campus librarians.
The purpose of the journal is to put K-16 educational partners in conversation with each other about critical issues in education, and to cultivate collective critical consciousness amongst educators in the communities surrounding the CSU campuses.
The inaugural issue of the journal, Praxis of Grief, Joy, and Healing, is available to view and download.
College of Health, Human Services & Nursing
Professor Emerita of Kinesiology Carole Casten was the keynote speaker at the Western Society for Kinesiology and Wellness (WSKW) convention on Oct. 6 in Oakland, Calif. Her presentation “The Future is You!” emphasized the value of knowing the history of the discipline and how to make an impact.
WSKW is committed to improving the quality of kinesiology and wellness programs, and is focused on professional development and the academic dissemination of information. Assistant Professor of Kinesiology Gioella Chaparro serves as president-elect of the organization.
College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences
Assistant Professor of Psychology Irene Tung was the lead author of “Prenatal Stress and Externalizing Behaviors in Childhood and Adolescence,” published in the American Psychological Association’s Psychological Bulletin. The study analyzed data from 55 studies with more than 45,000 total participants, and found that children whose mothers experience psychological distress during pregnancy may be at higher risk for mental health and behavior issues.
