On Feb. 1, students and community members had the opportunity to listen to California Senate District 35 candidates share their visions for the region in the lead up to the March 5 California primary election.
Hosted by CSUDH and radio station KJLH 102.3, the event began with voter education. CSUDH First Lady Davida Hopkins-Parham spoke about the importance of voting and encouraged participation in the democratic process.
“Activists fought, and some even died, for our right to vote,” she said. “I learned early on that all elections—local, state, presidential—they’re all important. The results impact almost every aspect of our lives.”
Professor of Criminal Justice Administration Gus Martin then commenced the candidate forum, which included the eight candidates seeking to represent Senate District 35. CSUDH and Carson fall within the district, and the current senator, Steven Bradford, is an alumnus. Throughout the event, speakers touted the university’s close ties with local government and its role as a driver of economic and social mobility.
