Toro Alumna Nautica Morrow Named Interim Women’s Basketball Coach
CARSON, Calif,.- Cal State Dominguez Hills has named one of its former standout athletes, Nautica Morrow, as interim head coach of the women's basketball program, following the departure of longtime head coach John Bonner.
Morrow, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 2019 and recently earned her Master of Arts in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution & Peacebuilding, will be entering her third year as a coach on the women's team this season, having previously served as Coach Bonner's assistant. Morrow has helped lead the Toros during a particularly auspicious moment for the program, including last season's historic 36-2 record, which included a regular season championship, a CCAA title, an NCAA West Regional championship, and an appearance in the NCAA Championship game.
As a student-athlete, the Los Angeles native earned All-CCAA First Team honors and was named CSUDH Female Athlete of the Year twice. Morrow led the Toros in points, assists, and steals, including setting a school record with 10 steals in a single game. In addition, Morrow's exceptional leadership abilities earned her the honor of being named a two-year team captain.
Beyond her role on the Toros coaching staff, Morrow has also coached the Cal Sparks AAU team and she runs her own player development program for young athletes.
"Coach Morrow has deep roots in our program," said Brett Waterfield, Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics. "She has excelled as both a player and assistant coach and her dedication, leadership, and deep understanding of our team's culture make her exceptionally well-suited for this role. I have full confidence in her ability to carry our championship culture forward and I look forward to her taking the reins as interim head coach and inspiring the next generation of Toros."
"I want to express my heartfelt thanks to President Parham, VP Franklin and AD Waterfield, and the entire Toro community for trusting me with the opportunity to lead this program," Morrow said. "Being named the interim head coach at CSUDH feels like a true blessing, and I'm incredibly honored. What excites me the most is the chance to work with a group of strong, talented young women who are eager to grow as athletes and as individuals. This role is personal for me. It's not just about leading a team; it's about giving back to a program that has played a significant role in shaping who I am today."
