Bringing together individual and collaborative works, the exhibition reflects on death, familial loss, and the ways grief reshapes everyday life. me and you … let’s get away… is a highly personal exhibition of new work by Capistrán and Mandujano. The works approach loss as an intimate experience shaped by family, culture, ritual, and shared memory. Rather than offering a single account of mourning, the exhibition makes room for contradiction: sorrow and affection, absence and continuing presence, gravity and absurdity. The works ask how objects, images, language, and creative acts can help us remember the dead and live alongside grief and absence. Together, the artists face death directly without surrendering to solemnity. Humor is not presented as a dismissal of pain, but as a form of care and a way of carrying what might otherwise feel unbearable. Thoughtful, inventive, spiritual, and at times unexpectedly funny, the exhibition recognizes mourning as uneven and ongoing while affirming the creativity, intimacy, and connection that can persist in the presence of loss. Juan Capistrán was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and raised in South Los Angeles. Working across sculpture, painting, performance, photography, and sound, he draws on personal history and cultural context to examine identity, resistance, liberation, and the structures that shape everyday life. His practice frequently brings music, literature, political history, and popular culture into dialogue with the visual languages of conceptual art. Hazel Mandujano is a Los Angeles-based artist, designer, and educator whose individual and collaborative work moves among art, publishing, exhibition design, and pedagogy. Her practice explores memory, mortality, and transcendence through emotionally resonant combinations of imagery, language, and cultural reference.
