Hostile Terrain 94 Opening Reception
Mar 2, 2026 11:00 AM | Join us for the Hostile Terrain 94 Project Exhibition opening reception in the Library 5th Floor South Gallery on Monday, March 2nd from 11am - 2pm.
Hostile Terrain 94 (HT94) is a participatory art project sponsored and organized by the Undocumented Migration Project (UMP), a nonprofit research-arts-education collective, directed by anthropologist Jason De León. The exhibition is composed of over 4,000 handwritten toe tags that represent migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2024. These tags are geolocated on a wall map of the desert showing the exact locations where remains were found. This installation has been shown nationally and globally in close to 150 locations since 2019 and is currently ongoing.
